The history books put the task facing Galway clearly into perspective as they bid on Saturday for a first championship win over the Kingdom in over four decades. Galway have not defeated Kerry since defeating them in the 1966 All-Ireland final on their way to winning their historic three-in-a-row. Saturday's meeting bring together teams that have clashed at the same level already this decade. The sides last met in the 2002 All Ireland quarter final which Kerry won convincingly on a scoreline of 2–17 to 1–12. But Galway's record against Kerry in the championship is dismal as the Tribesmen haven't beaten Kerry since the All Ireland final of 1965 when Galway captured the second of the three in a row of All Ireland titles. The previous year Galway also beat Kerry on a scoreline of 0-15 to 0-10 in the final also. Kerry have dominated Galway since then defeating them in the 1984 All Ireland semi final by 2-17 to 0-11 and after Galway and Kerry drew in the All Ireland final of 2000 at 0-14 each, it was Kerry who won the replay by 0-17 to 1-10.
