Facing All Ireland champions is always a tough call and after Galway senior footballers fell to Kerry last week the scene now turns to the ladies of the county. On Saturday next the Galway senior camogie side will face All Ireland champions Wexford in the All Ireland semi final at Nowlan Park in Kilkenny. Earlier this season Galway defeated Wexford in the round robin series but it was the Wexford side that ended Galway's dream at this stage of the competition last year. There is no reason why Galway should have any fears against the Wexford side, but the Slayney girls have been coming to their best form of the year in recent games. Galway started the year in good form, but recent games the Tribesgirls have failed to display their best talent. Having lost All Star Veronica Curtin in the opening minutes against Kilkenny, Galway have failed to ignite in the absence of the Kinvara player. Curtin is the only survivor of Galway's only All Ireland victory in 1996, and Liam Donoghue will be hoping that the star player will be fully recovered from injury. However the fact that Curtin has a lack of match practice could be a concern, even if the Kinvara player is fit could be a problem. Galway have quality players in defence in Therese Manton, Ann Marie Hayes and Sinead Cahalan while in attack the experience of Therese Maher can lead quality performances like Niamh Kilkenny, Brenda Kerins and Deirdre Burke, but all year much has depended on Jessica Gill. The young Athenry player is a quality star but will be very well watched by the Wexford side but Galway can well create an upset by reaching the All Ireland final. |
