Former Galway United skipper and U-21 manager Billy Clery will take charge of the Terryland Park side on a caretaker basis until a new manager is found following the sacking of Tony Cousins on Monday.

Clery's first game in charge will be away to champions Drogheda United on Friday night and his first home game will be next Tuesday in the League Cup against Longford Town.

Cousins was given his marching orders on Monday after a dismal display by his charges against Shamrock Rovers on Saturday when they went down to their second home defeat in succession and again failed to find the target.

The decision to sack Cousins follows a dreadful start to the campaign which saw just one goal — a deflected effort against part-time Cobh Ramblers — in three defeats and a draw in the four games to date.

The decision to remove Cousins as manager was taken at a meeting of the Executive Board of Galway United FC early on Monday morning.

In a statement, the club said it would like to thank Tony Cousins and his management team for their efforts for Galway United FC.

"The Board believes that a change of direction is required at this stage to achieve its stated objectives.

"Billy Clery has been appointed interim manager and will fulfil the duty on a caretaker basis. "Meanwhile, the position will be advertised and a suitable candidate will be appointed on a permanent basis in due course," said the statement.

By Tuesday morning the club had received fifteen applications for the vacant position from candidates north and south in Ireland, England and Scotland.
