Footballers collapse as Sligo secure shock win

A bad weekend for Galway GAA took a shock turn for the worst when Peter Ford's men were shocked by a fired-up Sligo side in the Connacht football final at Hyde Park.

Galway 0-12 Sligo 1-10

Having seen off the challenge of reigning Connacht champions Mayo and survived a tricky visit to Leitrim, it was expected that Galway would claim another Connacht crown against a limited Sligo side.

But Sligo, without a provincial crown since 1975, displayed heart and hunger that Galway were just not able to match and once more Galway will have to turn to the qualifiers if they are to reach Croke Park.

Unbridled scenes of joy greeted Sligo's first Connacht Senior football Championship triumph since 1975, but they were in stark contrast to shocked Galway faithful.

The fact that Ga;way failed to manage a single score from play in the second-half when they had the wind at their backs told its own sorry story.

The outcome was a fairytale outcome for Sligo boss Tommy Breheny, a side that the St Mary's clubman only took over in a caretaker capacity 17 months ago.

A solid full-back line of Charles Harrison, team captain Noel McGuire and Ross Donovan paved the way but there was no doubting Sligo's brilliance in attack where Mark Breheny led the way assisted by Sean Davey and John McPartland.

Midfielder Eamon O'Hara's 24th-minute goal was a testament to the Tourlestrane veteran's brilliance after a number of years without success.

All six of Galway's starting forwards got on the score sheet in a first half which ended 1-7 to 0-9 in the Yeats County's favour.

Five points without reply had helped Galway take a 0-5 to 0-2 cushion after 14 minutes but O'Hara's goal was the decisive score.

McPartland tagged on a quick point as Sligo took a 1-6 to 0-6 lead and Tommy Breheny's men held firm to go in at the interval armed with a one-point advantage.
