A decision will be taken in the New Year whether or not to install permanent floodlights at Pearse Stadium in Salthill Galway.

Temporary floodlights were installed for the International Rules game between Ireland and Australia in October.

Now GAA bosses in the county will sit down in the next few weeks and make a decision on permanent lights at the redeveloped Salthill venue.

At present, none of the county grounds in Galway -- Tuam, Athenry and Ballinasloe also have venues capable of staging inter-county games -- have floodlights.

Outgoing chairman of Galway County Board, Frank Burke, was the main driving force behind the redevelopment of the 35,000 capacity venue.

He said that most of the groundwork had been done for the installation of permanent lights.

"Provision was made when the venue was being redeveloped a few years for the installation of lights, so most of the piping and other infra-structural work has been done.

"The provision of permanent lights has been examined in the past few months by engineers and other professionals. It will now be a matter of sitting down with them, examining all aspects of the project and then making a decision whether or not to go ahead,' said Burke.

He said that project could cost up to ?1m but that it was possible floodlights could be installed in 2007 if a positive decision was taken early in the New Year.

Planning permission will be required in the built-up seaside resort but the success of the Aussie Rules game will enhance the prospect of a favourable decision from Galway City Council.

Meanwhile, former Galway star Stephen Joyce is back in inter-county management.

Joyce, a selector under John O'Mahony when Galway won the All-Ireland senior title in 1998 and 2001, has been appointed manager of the Galway U-21 side.

Indeed, all three members of the victorious Galway management of '98 and '01 will be back on the sideline in 2007 -- with Peter Warren appointed a selector to Peter Ford in Galway after O'Mahony took charge of Mayo.
