Col. Iognaid's dream of a first ever hat-trick of Connacht schools senior cup rugby wins was brought to a halt by arch rivals Garbally College in the quarter-finals at the Sportsground. Garbally College 6 Colaiste Iognaid 5 The Ballinasloe nursery, the most prolific winners of the competition, built their winning performance around an impressive pack which dominated the lineouts and scrums. Garbally had to saturate a lot of pressure in the opening half but still managed lead 3-0 at half-time when Robert O'Beirne landed a penalty after half an hour after they got on top. Garbally continued to dominate after the restart but could not break down a resolute defence by the champions. And the Galway city school seemed set to take another major step towards holding on to their title when scrum-half Thomas Flaherty dashed in for the game's only try seven minutes from the end. However, Garbally regrouped and the impressive fly-half O'Beirne booked a semi-final spot when he made no mistake with a 30 metre penalty from the left-wing. The champions had one final chance to save the day but while they kicked a 35 metre penalty to the corner, they were unable to retain possession and Garbally cleared to secure a deserved win.
