Cummins shows class

Last year's minor captain Richie Cummins answered a late-night call from John McIntyre to help Galway make the numbers against Laois. But his 2-2 from the bench in extra-time has catapulted him into the reckoning for national league action.

"We'll look at Richie over the next few weeks," said McIntyre. "He is very young and a great prospect but we want to be fair to him. We won't rush him into anything."

Cummins goaled twice and another from Joe Gantley in the first period of extra-time was enough to secure Galway's place in the Walsh Cup semi-final against Offaly, but for long stages of Sunday's match the Tribesmen looked likely to taste an early-season defeat to Laois. Laois led by 1-11 to 0-7 at half-time, but a dominant second-half from Ger Farragher sent the tie into extra-time, where Cummins' magic sealed the win.
