Galway 1-18, Cork 0-17 Mattie Murphy's excellent role as minor manager continues as the former Turloughmore and Gort player master-minded another Galway All-Ireland final appearannce after an excellent victory over Cork at Croke Park on Sunday. ![]() CLEARED . . . Galway wing-back Niall Donoghue clears his lines despite the efforts of Paul Honohan of Cork during Sunday's All-Ireland minor hurling semi-final at Croke Park. Photo: Stephen McCarthy/SPORTSFILE The sides were level on ten occasions and it looked as if nothing would separate the team heading towards the end of the third quarter. Galway and Cork traded scores for the opening forty minutes as if nothing would separate the sides and then Galway broke loose. Deadlocked at 0-10 each David Glennon landed a sixty five. Then the lively Richard Cummins fired over another and for the first time in the game two points separated the sides. Straight away Niall Burke collected a poor Cork clearance and added another point and on the three quarter stage Richard Cummins robbed the ball of Cork wing back William Egan and soloed through to crash the ball to the back of the Cork net and Galway were six points clear. Galway were chasing the game for much of the opening half and trailed by 0-5 to 0-4 early in the second quarter. Early points from Niall Burke (2), Richard Cummins and Domhnaill Fox had kept Galway in touch. Then Gort's Richard Cummins began to show his magic touch and twice in quick syuccession he raced through the Cork defence and pointed to put Galway ahead but the Rebel's always fought back and despite further points from Bernard Burke with a beauty from under the Cusack Stand and another from Niall Quinn the sides were deadlocked at 0-8 apiece at the break. Sean O'Farrell and Padraig O'Shea hit Cork points to reply to Cummins goal midway through the second half but David Burke, Richard Cummins and Bernard Burke scored three unanswered points for Galway and with nine minutes left Galway led by seven points, 1-16 to 0-12. Cork are never beaten in a hurling game and after substitute James Coughlan rifled an effort over the bar with a goal shot, Cork fought back and Padraig O'Shea (2), Simon O'Brien, Coughlan again and Aidan Walsh left just two points between the sides and normal time up. In the two minutes of added time it was Galway that emerged on top and David Burke with a pointed free and Niall Quinn sealed a Galway victory as Cork's William Egan was dismissed for a second bookable offence when he was harshly sent off for a mistimed challenge. |
