Cortoon Shamrocks 0-8 Former All-Star Derek Savage pointed the way as Cortoon Shamrocks qualified for the semi-finals of the Galway SFC for the first time in 30 years. Cortoon have never reached the Galway final but will hope to maintain the passion and comitment that saw them come through Saturday’s test at Tuam Stadium. Salthill, All-Ireland champions two years ago, will be kicking themselves as they had more than enough possession to advance but were guilty of some woeful shooting, especially in the second-half. In contrast, Cortoon made the most of what they created with Savage pointing four frees in a tight encounter. He got three of them in the opening half but their interval lead of 0-5 to 0-4 seemed insufficient given that they had played with the wind. But a combination of great heart and Salthill’s dreadful shooting ensured the sides were still level going into the final quarter. Then David Warde and Savage found the range within a minute before sub John Boylan reduced the deficit with his second point. But Warde once more found the range after an exchange with Savage and while Declan Burke reduced the deficit in the closing moments, Cortoon had the ability to close out the game.
