Defending champions Corofin begin their defence of the Frank Fox Cup this weekend as part of a series of mouth-watering ties around the county. Corofin kick-off with a clash against Michael Breathnachs in Pearse Stadium on Saturday evening next. Without doubt the north-Galway club remain the team to beat in the county this year, but they will have to match the 1997-98 Corofin squad that last put back-to-back title together.

Last year's runner-up Cortoon Shamrocks face a tough task when they face many people's dark horses, Caltra, in Tuam Stadium on Saturday evening. Defeated by three points in last year's decider – their first ever final – the Shamrocks may well struggle to produce a repeat performance.

The tie of the weekend is the clash between Salthill/Knocknacarra and Killererin in Tuam Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Champions in 2007, Killererin led by Padraig and Nicky Joyce will once more challenge for the county silverware, but may have to settle for the route through the back door if Jimmy Heverin's Salthill side have their way. Meanwhile, Moycullen have a local derby to deal with against Barna on Sunday in what should be a rip-roaring tie. A lot is expected from Moycullen this year, but in only their second year in senior football hopes of county glory may be wide of the mark.

Elsewhere in round one, Ballygar face An Cheathru Rua in Pearse Stadium on Saturday; newly promoted St Michaels face a baptism of fire against Caherlistrane in Tuam Stadium on Saturday; Claregalway come up against Milltown in Headford, also on Saturday evening; Glenamaddy play Killanin in Corofin; Kilkerrin/Clonberne play Mountbellew/Moylough in Ballinasloe; while Tuam Stars take home advantage into their clash with Annaghdown on Sunday.
