Galway defender Michael Comer will miss the early stages of the national league after it was confirmed he had fractured his jaw bone in Sunday's FBD League clash with GMIT.

The Corofin clubman was injured in a challenge by GMIT's Rory McTiernan in the opening half of Sunday's game at Spiddle.

Galway's Padraic Joyce was sent off two minutes later for a tackle on McTiernan. Comer was taken to University College Hospital in Galway city where it was diagnosed he had fractured his jaw bone.

"He will be out for at least four weeks," said Galway manager Liam Sammon.

"It is unfortunate as Michael was going very well but he will bounce back from this," added Sammon. Galwa will open their national league campaign on Sunday week against Laois at Pearse Stadium.
