Clifden Community School beat St. Joseph's College to advance to the Connacht Schools Cup semi final in an entertaining match at Monastery Field in Clifden.

Clifden Community School 20 St. Joseph's College 16

Clifden, having not won the competition since 1974, were dealt a tough blow early on when they lost their captain David Mullen to injury after just two minutes.

But they did not allow that to impact on them and hit the front after 28 minutes when scrum-half Eoin Burke scored under the posts, with Sean Joyce converting.

The match remained scoreless until the 28th minute when Clifden scrumhalf Eoin Bourke blocked down to run in under the posts, making it easy for stand in captain Sean Joyce to push Clifden into a seven point lead.

Two penalties from the boot of St. Joseph's full back and captain Eoin O'Mahony reduced the deficit to a 7-6 at the break and another O'Mahony kick put the 'Bish' in front.

However, Clifden responded with another Joyce penalty before flanker Dean Alcock got their second try after 56 minutes before Joyce sealed the issue with another try to make it 20-9.

O'Mahony pulled back a late try for the 'Bish' but they were unable to save the game.
