Clifden CS were denied in the quarter-finals of the Connacht Tribune schools senior cup when Marist secured a 10-3 victory with an injury-time try at the Monastery Field on Thursday. Flanker Killian Donnelly was the Marist College hero when he struck to send the Athlone school into the semi-finals. It was cruel luck Clifden who had battled gamely throughout and who were in a great position when they trailed 3-0 at the interval having played against the wind. Marist only went ahead eight minutes from the interval when full-back Kevin Dunne slotted a penalty from in front of the posts. Clifden got back on level terms when out-half Shane Sweeney landed a penalty after 52 minutes. The weather continued to deteriorate as both sides battled it out on the Connemara pitch but it was Donnelly who pushed over in the dying moments. Full-back Dunne added the conversion to set up a semi-final meeting with holders Colaiste Iognaid in a repeat of last year’s final. Meanwhile, St Joseph's College Galway were on the wrong end of a drubbilng from Sligo Grammar School in their quarter-final of the senior cup. Seven first-half tries from the Sligo side ensure d a 39-point deficit at half-time, and a further four after the break completed the 67-0 rout. Clifden Community School: St Joseph’s: |
