St James retained their Galway minor football title when they held off the challenge of Monivea/Abbey at Pearse Stadium on Sunday.

The Mervue/Renmore side had more firepower up front but despite strong leadership from county minor captain Paul Conroy, they were pushed all the way by a Monivea/Abbey side who refused to give up. St James led by 0-6 to 0-4 with Alan Hanley and Ronan O'Connell causing the Monivea/Abbey defence a lot of trouble.

But Monivea/Abbey came back in the second-half but while a superb goal from Rory O'Neill levelled the game after 37 minutes, they never managed to get in front in the game.

The sides were still level with nine minutes remaining but points from O'Connell and Ryan Mangan sealed a second win on the trot for St James.
