The reigning Galway Senior Football Championship title holders Killererin were dumped out of this year's campaign by a spirited Cortoon Shamrocks at Tuam Stadium. ![]() SUPERB . . . Not even Padraic Joyce was able to save Killererin and although Joyce was his side's top scorer with five points, they were no match for a lively Cortoon Shamrocks side. Derek Savage and Mickey Costello, along with young colleagues David Warde and Michael Martyn ended the Killererin dream with outstanding displays. Savage, Warde and Martyn all pointed before Mickey Costello collected the ball and lorded fifty metres before crashing the ball low past Killererin custodian Alan Keane and Cortoon Shamrocks led by 1-5 to 0-1 at the break. Just when Killererin looked to be getting into the game Cortoon Shamrocks struck again for a goal which Shane Gilmore finished when Alan Keane failed to deal with a dropping ball. Brian Walsh added a third goal near the end to make it one of the greatest days of Cortoon Shamrocks football as they knocked the holders out of the Claregalway Hotel Galway Senior Football Championship winning in the end on a final scoreline of 3-9 to 0-7. Killererin were not the only high-profile casualtie as former All-Ireland club champions Caltra were knocked out by last year's intermediate winners Moycullen. Moycullen built on that win by capturing the All-Ireland intermediate title and after being defeated by Killererin in the opening round made the most of the second chance offered by the qualifier system Galway star Gareth Bradshaw, playing in the middle of the field, got the game's only goal as Moycullen carved out a 1-9 to 0-8 win after coming from 0-6 to 0-3 down at the break. Salthill/Knocknacarra powered their way into the next round with a merited win over a spirited Monivea/Abbey side winning by 0-15 to 0-10. Former Mayo star Maurice Sheridan was on song with seven frees and along with Seamie Rabbitte and Sean Armstrong the city side proved too strong for Monivea. NUIG were forced to extra time before they saw off the challenge of Micheal Breathnachs. The Gaeltacht side scored two first half goals to lead by three points at half time but with Eddie Hoare, Fiachra Breathnach and Mark Ronaldson on form the students advanced to the next round. Last years beaten finalists Milltown saw of the challenge of Kilkerrin/Clonbern when they won by 0-11 to 0-7. Milltown led by two points at the break but with good performances from Alan Feerick, Damien Brennan, Ciaran Murphy and Darren Mullahy Milltown finished the game well to advance. An Cheathru Rua and Claregalway must meet again after the sides ended deadlocked after extra time at Pearse Stadium. It took Claregalway twenty five minutes to score and they looked out of the game after the opening half. However after Fergal McEvoy goaled Claregalway were back in the game forcing the game to extra time with the scoreboard reading An Cheathru Rua 0-10 Claregalway 1-7. An Cheathru Rua scored 1-3 without reply in the opening period of extra time, but again Claregalway replied and brought the game to parity with county star Barry Cullinane finishing the ball to the Carraroe net to leave the final score after extra time An Cheathru Rua 1-13 Claregalway 2-10. In a preliminary round game Tuam Stars advance to meet Corofin when they defeated Killanin in a disappointing game which ended 0-11 to 0-5. |
