An investigation is to be carried out by Galway Football Board after five players were sent off in a foul-tempered senior club championship match, while there were also ugly scenes in another tie as holders Corofin advanced. Former All-Ireland club champions Salthill/Knocknacarra had three players — John Boylan, captain Declan Burke and Tomas Burke — sent off when they received straight red cards from inter-county referee Gerry Kinneavy in a bad-tempered clash at Tuam Stadium last night against Milltown. Boylan and captain Burke were dismissed in a melee that involved a large number of players after 20 minutes, with Milltown's Shane Waldron also being sent off in the same incident. Less than 30 seconds later Ciaran Murphy of Milltown got a second yellow card for a late tackle, while Salthill's Tomas Burke got his marching orders during a second-half where the sides were level four times before late points from Seamie Crowe and Sean Armstrong secured a place in the quarter-final for Salthill/Knocknacarra on a scoreline of 0-11 to 0-9. Nicky Joyce, back in the county squad after missing the Sligo semi-final win, sent out a timely message to the watching Liam Sammon as he kicked five points as Killererin defeated Moycullen by 0-14 to 1-10, with Gareth Bradshaw getting the Moycullen goal from a penalty. Annaghdown forced extra time with a fierce burst in the final quarter after trailing Barna by 1-5 to 0-2 approaching the three quarter stage, but they scored six unanswered points to force the game to extra time, before going on to win by 0-12 to 1-6. A youthful Tuam Stars held out against a spirited second half performance from Connemara side Micheal Breathnachs winning in the end by 1-13 to 0-14, even though they lost captain Tony Costello to a straight red. A goal from Adrian Martyn in the opening half powered St Brendan's into the next round when the defeated Glenamaddy by 1-10 to 0-12. At half time St Brendan's led by 1-7 to 0-7 with Martyn’s goal crucial after three Patrick Cunningham points gave them a perfect start. Reigning champions Corofin were forced to extra time by An Cheathru Rua in a disappointing game at Pearse Stadium. Corofin led by 0-5 to 0-2 at half-time, and three Alan O'Donovan points had Corofin in the driving seat, when Shane O Sullibhean won a penalty for An Cheathru Rua which he duly converted. With time running out An Cheathru Rua corner back Micheal Antoine O Liodean forced the game to extra time when he crashed the ball to the Corofin net and ugly scenes prevailed as the teams headed to the dug out before extra time. In extra time Corofin took over to run out winners on a scoreline of Corofin 0-14 An Cheathru Rua 2-5. Two goals from Shane Hogan denied a brave Claregalway side as former All Ireland club champions Caltra marched on to the quarter finals. Hogan got his first when he finished a rebound after Michael Meehan had a penalty saved by Brian O’Donoghue, while he added a second after the break. Mountbellew/Moylough defeated Caherlistrane by 0-13 to 0-11 after extra time with a missed Cormac Bane penalty the big talking point at a time when they were leading by two points before Joe Bergin inspired a Mountbellew revival. |
