Recalled Galway defender Ollie Canning says he is thrilled to be asked to captain the Tribesmen for this year's championship.

The 31-year old, who has not played for Galway since the 2006 All-Ireland quarter-final defeat to Kilkenny, has been given the skipper's job by Ger Loughnane after it was confirmed that captain David Collins is out for the season.

The 31 year old, who has won three All-Star awards, led Portumna to their second All-Ireland club title in three years in March.

"It is a great honour and I am delighted to accept it. I didn't have to consider the matter long before accepting.

"I've captained the county a couple of times before and it is great to be asked again this time round," he said.

With younger brother Joe settling into the senior side - he scored 3-4 in a challenge match against Clare on Sunday - Canning believes Galway can bridge their 20-year gap without an All-Ireland.

"There's a great buzz around the camp at the moment and preparations for our championship meeting with Antrim are progressing very well," said Canning.
