Galway will be expected to round off the inter-county season on Sunday by winning their ninth All-Ireland U-21 title when they take on Dublin at Croke Park.

ImageThe game will be played at Croke Park at 2 pm, prior to the All-Ireland senior camogie final between Wexford and Cork.

Standing in Galway’s way of success is a Dublin side who epitomise the massive strides made in underage hurling in the capital and Vincent Mullins’ men can expect as strong a challenge as they would from anyone of the major hurling counties.

Dublin, who won the Leinster minor title this year, have never won an All-Ireland in this grade and there only other appearance in the final came in 1972.

That was the day Galway signalled that they were about to become a force as they captured their first ever underage success, a win which spawned the glory that was to follow at senior in the subsequent years.

Galway, minor winners three years ago, showed their championship mettle when coming from behind to oust Cork in a thrilling semi-final.

Major performers are vital in key positions to win All-Irelands and with senior players Ger Mahon and John Lee manning the central defensive positions in front of inspirational goalkeeper James Skehill, Galway have the ability to thwart the Dubs.

But it is the twin threat posed up front by Joe Canning and Kerrill Wade which should swing this in Galway’s favour and while the county’s followers have long since given up on the theory of underage success leading to senior glory, it would be a timely boost for Galway to annex another crown in this grade against a Dublin side whose hopes have dipped following the unavailability through suspension of Peadar Carton.
