Injured Galway star Joe Bergin has issued a plea to his colleagues - get a championship run going so that the Tribesmen will still be in contention when he is back in action in a couple of months.

The 27-year old suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon against Mayo in the league but he is ahead of schedule on his return and has targeted an All-Ireland quarter-final date for his comeback.

"It usually takes four to six months to get back but it is going well and I am told I am ahead of schedule. I won't make it before the end of the provincial championship but should be ok if we are in the All-Ireland quarter-final.

"But that is the key, my season is over unless the lads put a good run together and we are still in the race by then. Hopefully, we will get a good start against Roscommon on Sunday and work from there," said the Mountbellew-Moylough clubman.

At the moment, Bergin's involvement in this year's championship is confined to helping his employers, Ulster Bank, promote their new sponsorship of the football championship.

The midfielder, who works in property finance for the bank, was on hand when Ulster Bank's Virtual GAA Tour set up camp in Eyre Square in Galway on Saturday.

The towering Bergin was over-shadowed on Saturday by the seven-foot high Henri Hippo as hundreds of children and tourists participated in a virtual kicking competition.

"It is frustrating waiting to get back. The only other time I suffered a long-term injury was when I did my cruciate but that happened in October three years ago and I was back for the championship the following year.

"I am now out of the cast and am wearing a boot cast and am walking around so there is progress every day," added Bergin.
