Galway footballers have got a perfect boost ahead of Sunday's opening game of the national league against Derry with Joe Bergin likely to be fit. There were fears that the Irish International Rules star could be facing another lengthy spell on the sideline after injuring his left elbow in an FBD League game last Sunday week. Bergin fell awkwardly in a challenge close to the GMIT goal in that game and had to go off in obvious pain. "It seemed serious at the time but thankfully it turned out to be just ligaments and it has cleared up quickly. I should be okay for Sunday's game, but I will need to see how I go in training first," said the versatile Galway player. Bergin, speaking at the launch of a Gaelic Telecom promotion in Galway, said that Peter Ford's men were anxious to start their league campaign on a positive note. "Last year we did not start the league well and that left us with a lot to do. We won four or five on the trot and got to the league final, but this year we will be hoping for more consistency. "We have trained hard over the past few months and the FBD League campaign went well, but Sunday's game against Derry will be a new test," he said. The Mountbellew-Moylough player said that there was a good mix of youth and experience in the side. The primary date in their mind is the May 20th Connacht championship clash against Mayo when they will hope to get revenge for their provincial final defeat of last year. "Of course, that is the date everything is geared towards but there is a lot of work to be done before then," added the bank official. Galway's opening tie against Derry has been switched from Ballinasloe and will now take place at Pearse Stadium next Sunday. |
