Now, that date of Saturday 9th August rings a bell. That is the day the swimmers will cross Galway Bay from Auginish in Co. Clare to Palmers Rock at Salthill Promenade in aid of Cancer Care West.

Mervue United will host an Open Day on Saturday at 11.00am. A special welcome is issued to all youngsters between the ages of Under 11 to Under 15.

The latest team to entry the Umbro Galway Cup 2008 to be held in the Salthill Devon Grounds at Drom is Abu Dhabi Thistle FC from the Middle East! How exotic!

The Galway Triathlon Club held its annual triathlon on Saturday in Cill Chiaráin Connemara. A full compliment signed up well in advance. Another success. The club supports the Carna and Islands Lifeboat Fund. www.GalwayTriathlonClub.com.

The Corrib Water Polo Series of Summer Sea Swims had its fourth outing on Thursday last in a full tide with a gentle swell. First home was Conor Smyth, second Darragh Heskin and third Adam Caulfield who had the fastest time in 16.25. Eileen Kilkenny won the Ladies, second Michelle Power and third Lily O'Brien. The fastest time went to Kate Coyle in 19.53. The swimmers will be out again tomorrow night.

Forgot to tell you last week that Brendan Cassidy, a past President of the club, won the Corinthians Golf Society outing in Oughterard GC on Saturday week. P.J. Cuddy was runner/up with Eamon Howley third and Paddy Flynn fourth. Catherine Quinlan won the Ladies prize and Mary Grealy runner/up. Michael Duffy won the Visitors prize with Iggy O'Muircheartaigh second and Martin Newell third. The Society's next outing will be on Saturday 9th August in Athenry Golf Club. And the club's Am Am will be held on Friday 15th August in the Galway Golf Club.

By the way Corinthians had a huge (pay?) day on Saturday when twenty teams from all over the country came to challenge for the All Ireland Tag Rugby Championships. Not a hitch and all under the watchful eye of IRFU big wig Ollie Hodges who luxuriates in the title of Leisure Rugby Manager! And they wanted to close Connacht Rugby down!

But not to be confused with the Corinthians Tag Rugby Finals that will be held on Friday @ 6.40pm. 72 teams will be involved! Should be some evening!

The Goal Swim will be held on Sunday at Blackrock between 12 noon and 1.00pm. Swim a metre, swim a mile, splash about, it is all the one to those in need of water supplies in the Third World. Put your donation into the bucket or do it 'proper' and get a sponsorship card from Goal @ 091 587901.

This must surely be a first. Connacht's Rugby Summer Camps in association with Centra for boys and girls 6 to 13 years will move to An Cheathru Rua on Monday next. To where? A rugby camp in Carraroe! Yep, and it will be hosted by An Ghaeltacht RFC. Heard it all now. So much to learn 'as an imirt', 'iúd', 'clibert', 'sinneadh amach' and then there is the rugby to learn. Luvit! Olympians Paul Hession (Athenry AC) and Olive Loughnane (Loughrea AC) won national titles at the weekend in the 100m sprint and 5K Race Walk respectively. Paul equalled his Irish All Comers record of 10.21 and Olive had a PB of 21.07.28. Can't do much better than that. Connemara man Sean Breathnach (Galway City Harriers) won Galway's third gold medal when taking the Shot Putt title with 15.74m. He was runner/up last year. Sean also won two silvers in the 56 lbs for height and distance, some haul! Our new friend from Lithuania Mindaugas Kurcenkovas (Galway City Harriers) last year's winner of the Javelin had to make do with bronze this year due to injury.

Kilconly GAA Club hold a fundraiser at Claremorris Golf Club tomorrow and Friday. Joe Flaherty 087 6845891 has the details.
