KATS stage ‘The Odd Couple’

Wednesday, 10th May, 2017 1:00am

Knocknacarra Amateur Theatre Society (KATS) is staging ‘The Odd Couple’ at An Taibhdhearc from this evening, Wednesday 10 May, to Saturday 13 May. Shows start at 8pm.

Cllr Niall McNelis launched the Society’s recent press event in Sheridan’s Pub Knocknacarra to an enthusiastic gathering.

In his address, he said, “On my way over to the press reception this evening I remember what I think is an appropriate quote from our President Michael D Higgins, ‘Every age, after all, must have its own aisling and dream of a better, kinder, happier, shared world.’

“When Paddy Henry proposed and started a theatre group for Knocknacarra almost 20 years ago he had his vision and dream of a better, happier and shared theatrical world. From a humble and fragile beginning KATS has evolved in its vibrancy, variety and nurturing of interest in drama and without doubt the smiling spirit of Paddy is with us this evening as the committee, director and actors of KATS forge on with their latest production The Odd Couple - the female version.

“Support, which I reckon, is the theme of this evening, works in two ways. For the last twenty years or so KATS have supported this community with social events, entertaining evenings, workshops and drama coaching and in turn as a quid pro quo the local business community has been very supportive as have the audiences from near and far who continue to support KATS performances.

“Last November, for example, KATS held totally sold out shows in the Galway Bay hotel and it was nights of great hilarity and entertainment. All of us can do with a laugh and the upcoming show in the Taibhdhearc from 10 May next will no doubt give us good reason for a good giggle.

“The normal blessing on these occasions is “break a leg” but as my theme this evening has been about support, my blessing to you is to break KATS previous record for audiences and the community support generally!” said Cllr McNelis, with KATS Chairperson Geraldine Holmes thanking him for his kind words.

KATS’ version of ‘The Odd Couple’ runs in An Taibhdhearc on Middle Street from 10-13 May at 8pm.
