Youth Ballet West host 10th Anniversary Gala

Wednesday, 10th May, 2017 1:00am

Youth Ballet West (YBW) will celebrate their 10th anniversary with a Gala Performance in The Town Hall Theatre on Saturday 13 May at 7pm and Sunday 14 May at 5pm.

To mark 10 years of providing the highest standard of dance in the West of Ireland the company are presenting an eclectic collection of their most popular works. These include the crazy ‘Tea-Party’ from Alice Underground, the funky 50’s from Teenage Kicks and Paddy Casey’s ‘Whatever Gets You True’ from Strings. It will showcase the company’s excellent classical ballet training, ‘Friends’ from Coppelia, Kitri’s glamorous variation from Don Quixote, excerpts from Swan Lake, together with the world premiere of Artistic Director, Judith Sibley’s new work ‘A Tribute to Haydn’, a homage both to the composer and to the art of classical ballet itself.

For these special Gala evenings several other new works have been created by Judith Sibley and by members of the company. Prepare to be blown away by the fusion of contemporary and Irish dance in ‘Theme from Green Bushes’, the raw emotion in Reflexions, the sheer energy of Cats and, highlighting the company’s remarkable versatility, a tap number. For younger dance enthusiasts they are presenting ‘Once Upon a Time’, a children’s ballet featuring all the classic fairy tale characters. The little ones will delight at seeing the three bears come to life, Red Riding Hood challenge and beat the wolf and much, much more.

This 10 year Gala evening is a double celebration for ballet in the west. After losing their Arts Council support last year Youth Ballet West is delighted to have had it reinstated this year. YBW is one of only three ballet companies to be in receipt of Arts Council funding. The company is also supported by Galway City Arts Office and Galway County Council.

YBW dancers come from teachers across the west, north-west and the midlands and include dancers from Galway, Athlone, Roscommon, Tipperary, Sligo and Mayo. Over the past 10 years many YBW dancers have been accepted into leading dance schools in the UK and Europe.

The company has brought the love and magic of ballet to many audience members in the last decade - from productions in The Town Hall Theatre, to thrilling thousands on the streets in Macnas Parades, to annual trips to Crumlin Hospital at Christmas performing excerpts from Nutcracker, bringing joy to the sickest children. From balls to fashion shows and everything in between Youth Ballet West have enriched the cultural core of Galway and many parts of Ireland beyond measure.

Celebrate this wonderful milestone by joining them for their celebratory performances this weekend. For tickets go to or call 091-569777. Tickets are €18/€16.
