Galway favourites The Stunning will headline a special Benefit Concert with the irrepressible Tommy Tiernan and local heroes My Fellow Sponges at the Black Box Galway later this month.
The concert, which is in support of five female lecturers taking gender equality cases against NUI Galway, takes place on Wednesday 29 March.
Formed in Galway in 1987, The Stunning are one of the most successful Irish bands ever. They toured relentlessly in the seven years that they were initially together, building up a following that would guarantee their place in Irish rock history. Their debut album ‘Paradise in the Picturehouse’ spent five weeks at number one in 1990 and became one of the most-loved Irish albums of all time. Two years later, the follow-up Once Around The World also hit the number one spot, and the band went on to sell over 100,000 albums in Ireland alone. Brewing up a Storm has become an anthem of sorts and is to be heard everywhere from football stadiums to clubs around the country where it is still a guaranteed floor-filler. Songs such as Half Past Two, Romeo’s on Fire, and Everything that Rises is still to be heard on the radio and have been featured in movies and numerous compilation albums of the best of Irish rock. The band toured the US and the UK with the likes of Bob Dylan and The B52s. During their time, they scooped every music prize and award going and their music is still to be heard on the airwaves. The band split up in 1994 to pursue other interests and they reformed in 2003 to support the re-release of their debut album Paradise in the Picturehouse. They now perform occasionally for select Irish shows and festivals and were last in Galway in 2012 when they headlined the Volvo Ocean Race Festival with a major outdoor show at Galway Docks. The band are currently in the studio recording a new album, set for release in 2017.
Based in Galway City, My Fellow Sponges have been winning fans for three years now with their onstage theatrics and often unpredictable but seamless movement between musical styles and mood, creating quite a stir locally and increasingly nationally.
Comedian extraordinaire Tommy Tiernan takes a break from his hectic touring schedule of sell-out shows and has been given free rein (not that you might have any choice in the matter!) to do whatever he wants as MC, so you can expect the unexpected!
There will be great raffle prizes on the night including tickets to shows, original unique star portrait paintings by Oisín Carey and many more.
Tickets, €25/€20, are now on sale from the Town Hall Theatre on 091-569777 and www.tht.ie
