NUI Galway and Leitrim County Council will host the seventh International Seminar on John McGahern, commemorating the work of the renowned Irish writer, from Thursday 23 to Saturday 25 May in Co. Leitrim.
The literary, historical and hinterland aspects of McGahern’s work will be the focus this year, and the keynote lecture will be given by Roy Foster, Carroll Professor of Irish History at the University of Oxford.
Commenting on the opening event, Dr John Kenny, Academic Director of the Seminar, remarked that “Professor Foster’s talk on ‘McGahern and the Memory of the Irish Revolution’ promises to be one of the vital occasions in the seven years of this McGahern Seminar”.
The Seminar includes a rich variety of lectures, open discussions, readings and tours. Among the speakers will be Dutch novelist, Gerbrand Bakker, Patrick McCabe, one of the key Irish fiction writers of the post-McGahern generation, and Claire Kilroy, one of the most noted Irish novelists of the subsequent generation.
A limited number of places are still available for the full seminar, however the keynote lecture in the Bush Hotel in Carrick-on-Shannon on Thursday, 23 May at 7pm is open to all.
