A junior club football manager asks:
"We started keeping detailed statisitics on games this season and have noticed that while we have two good midfielders, we are being beaten in midfield breaks in most matches. What can we do to improve this?"

Five weeks into my training regime and at last I am feeling more positive about the task that lies ahead of me. For the first time since I started training I feel I am capable of completing the 8Km run without ubearable difficulty. Finally I feel I have turned a corner and can only progress from here.

It was a no contest, 14 players plus the man of the match on one team versus just 14 players on the other! No contest even if our side fielded in such a convoluted format that probably none of them knew really what their position was. Confuse the opposition (not to mention ourselves) that's the thing. The man of the match – a young fella — got entangled with a big rock — an ould fella — and with only one hand free scored a peach of a goal, the first score for our side. No contest for sure.

Galway 2-12
Mayo 1-14
Few would have predicted such a classic second half after a disappointing opening encounter but in the end it was a breathtaking clash and a positive victory for Liam Sammon as he guided Galway to their 44th Connacht title when defeating Mayo by the narrowest of margins on Sunday in McHale Park, Castlebar.

What a clash as Galway will face aginst Cork in the latest round of the All-Ireland qualifier as the two sides come together next weekend. After losing in the Munster championship, Cork looked a sluggish side as they cast away the Dublin challenge last weekend but facing Ger Loughnane's side is the last game that they would want.

After a lack-lustre Connacht football championship it was great to see a marvellous day out at the Connacht final on Sunday in Castlebar. The banter of old days was back and there was plenty of sideshows with street entertainers and musicians adding the atmosphere outside the ground.
