Toyota held its top position in the new car market in August, according to the latest Society of the Irish Motor Industry figures. Toyota has retained market leadership for the year to date, with a 15.03 per cent market share. It is well ahead of its nearest rivals.

The Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI) released figures for new car sales for August. New car sales in August 2007 (8,991) were 1 per cent down on August 2006 (9,083), while sales for the first eight months of the year (175,130) were 5.56 per cent up on the same period in 2006 (165,912).

 Volvo has added two new engines and models to its FlexiFuel bio-ethanol range. To power the all new Volvo V70 estate and the new Volvo S80 executive saloon, a two-litre FlexiFuel unit will arrive later this year and will be joined by a five-cylinder 2.5-litre turbocharged engine in 2008.

Toyota leads the carmakers in the annual ‘Best Global Brands’ ranking, published by Business Week magazine. The Japanese carmaker is ranked number six behind names such companies as Coca Cola (first), Microsoft (second) and IBM (third). Since last year, the value of the Toyota brand has risen 15 per cent to $32 million.
