Dear Editor,
The latest crisis to emerge from Galway City Council, the public furore over re-surfacing Salthill Promenade, indicates a malaise which is at the heart of local governance in Galway.

A Chara
When the Irish Government decided to sell our national airline to the highest bidder, it engaged in the usual blame Brussels scenario, when it informed us that the European Commission would not allow them to invest in Aer Lingus. Subsequent communication from the Commission showed this to be untrue.

Dear Editor,
The Aer Lingus Shannon-Heathrow gate-nap will prove disastrous for most businesses across the entire western seaboard. Switching to alternative carriers, flying to lesser London airports from Shannon, Galway and Knock cannot make up for the loss of efficiency direct Heathrow flights brought to this region.

Dear Editor,
I note that in your article on Wednesday 1 August about the recently elected Senator Rónán Mullen, you labelled him as the ‘conservative’ columnist and barrister.

One of the debates that dominated the 2007 General Election campaign in the West this year was the apparent poor development of the West in contrast to the development in the East of the country. Figures and statistics were thrown back and forth about Government spends, the roll out of major projects such as BreastCheck, poor road infrastructure, transport etc with many anti-‘same-againers’ saying that the people of the West finally had to stand up against the lopsided approach and demand equality.

Dear Editor
I feel that I have to reply to a couple of the
usual anti air show articles and letters that have been printed over
the last couple of weeks. Firstly, the article printed by GAAW that
Prof. Noam Chomsky has lent his support for them and their views on the
Salthill Air Show. Scraping and barrels spring to mind here!

Dear Editor
We have just returned to Texas from a delightful
visit to the 'Emerald Isle'. Our visit was centred around the beautiful
Galway area. Even driving 'on the wrong side of the road' wasn't as bad
as we had feared. Certainly, this good impression was enhanced by what
we found to be very courteous, skilled...and patient Irish drivers.

Dear Editor
Having read your leading letter on 27 June, I came
to the following conclusion: the anti-war protestors, a minute group,
were thinking of the innocent people killed by those US Air Force
planes in recent years.

According to Roger Harrison (letters 11 June 07), the Salthill Air Show is a celebration of aviation. How come then the organisers only wanted 'military related exhibitors' to grace their show? And why, if it is only aviation the organisers want to celebrate, do they regularly present the pilots of the warplanes as 'Top Guns' in their publicity material? (See: 'Chance to meet Top Guns of Salthill Air Show' - Galway Independent 14 June 2006)
