Projects done in national interest must be scrutinised
Wednesday, 22 August 2007
Dear Editor,

On the 23 June 2006, President George W. Bush issued an executive order stating the Federal Government must limit its use of taking private property for ‘public use’ with ‘just compensation’, for the ‘purpose of benefiting the general public’. He limited this use by stating that it may not be used ‘for the purpose of advancing the economic interest of private parties to be given ownership or use of the property taken’.

All citizens have a responsibility to report crimes
Wednesday, 22 August 2007
Dear Editor,

In last week's Independent you report an interview with a taxi driver who said that during Race Week he or she had been offered cocaine a number of times by passengers, some of whom had themselves taken the drug while in the taxi. What I cannot understand is why he or she did not immediately drive these passengers to the nearest Garda station, where they could be arrested.

Keep religion to yourself
Wednesday, 22 August 2007

Dear Editor,

I am writing in response to N. Carroll's letter (1/8/07). It may surprise this person to know that having a degree in Theology as I do, none of the views expressed were particularly new or shocking to me. The crux of the whole matter is thus: it was claimed that I am defending Amnesty International's right to have it's voice heard regarding abortion, while denying the Catholic Church the same right.

Outraged, embarrassed and ashamed at ongoing water crisis
Wednesday, 22 August 2007
Dear Editor,

As a proud Galway resident I feel outraged, embarrassed and ashamed at the ongoing water crisis. I am outraged that our extremely well paid civil ‘servants’ in government, in the City Council, in the County Council and in the HSE don’t have the respect, decency or professionalism to issue an apology to the people of Galway and our visitors, to address us in a public forum, to provide us with regular safety updates via the post, or to provide free safe water whilst they fumble to address the crisis.

Menlo Castle should be preserved
Wednesday, 08 August 2007
Dear Editor,

We fully support the call from the Labour Party for Menlo Castle and all it's surrounding to be established as a new city park. The building itself should be a stabilised and preserved ruin much as it has been for the past 100 years.

Business needs to rethink road strategy
Wednesday, 08 August 2007
Dear Editor,

I wholeheartedly agree with the vision of Galway as portrayed in the letter of 2 May last from Seamus Kilbane, Gerry Kilcommins and co. As these business leaders are people with proven track records in securing investment and jobs into our region, their views should be listened to.

Dear Editor,

Thank you for your coverage of the Tom Johnson Summer School and for the quotations from my paper, ‘Facing the Future - Labour's Role in the coming decade’ (which is available on request).

Parlon’s CIF appointment raises serious ethical questions
Wednesday, 25 July 2007
Dear Editor,

I feel it important to react to the announcement that former PD junior Minister Tom Parlon, who lost his seat at the last election, is taking up a position as Director General of the Construction Industry Federation (CIF).

An Taisce feels Salthill Prom is a protected structure
Wednesday, 25 July 2007
Dear Editor,

The latest crisis to emerge from Galway City Council, the public furore over re-surfacing Salthill Promenade, indicates a malaise which is at the heart of local governance in Galway.

Government has failed to put people before profit in Aer Lingus Heathrow pull out
Wednesday, 15 August 2007
A Chara

When the Irish Government decided to sell our national airline to the highest bidder, it engaged in the usual blame Brussels scenario, when it informed us that the European Commission would not allow them to invest in Aer Lingus. Subsequent communication from the Commission showed this to be untrue.
