How do you capture the thrills and spills of the Galway Bay Sailing Club GB12 Regatta held against the backdrop of the incredible week long festivities of the Volvo Ocean Race Finale. With a dolphin performing back flips across the bow waves as the boats left Galway Docks to return to Oranmore on Sunday, it wasn’t just the humans who were blown away by the spectacle!
With over 40 boats entered in the Regatta, the field was split into three classes with a fourth white sails class. In Class 1 IRC, X-Rated took the honours with Joie de Vie and After Midnight coming in second and third respectively. In Class 1 Echo, After Midnight came in first with X-Rated in second place and Mustang Sally taking third. In Class 2 IRC and Class 2 Echo, Harmony was overall winner with Tribal and Egalite coming in second and third respectively. In Class 3 IRC, Boojun was first with Big Deal and Hallmark in second and third place. Finally, in Class 3 Echo, Boojun came in first with Hallmark and Privateer in silver and bronze.
As always this event was run by many volunteers giving up their time to organise the event. Planning took over three months and it all came together to give over 200 sailors a memorable week’s racing. The organisers have thanked Rear Commodore Cruisers Cormac Fahy for coordinating the whole event, regatta partners Galway Harbour Company and main sponsors Lake Region Medical and Griffin’s Bar of Clifden for their support.
