Three members of Galway Community Circus have been selected to represent Ireland at the international Magic Circus Show in Geneva, Switzerland, where they will perform in the circus tent of the Cirque de Noel alongside other European youth circuses.
The Magic Circus Show is an annual entertainment production put on by Eurovision TV, in which children from different parts of Europe between the ages of nine and 14 perform circus acts highlighting a variety of skills, bringing the rich and diverse traditions of Europe under one big tent. Jugglers, acrobats, trapeze artists, clowns and air gymnasts will be among those showing off their talent.
Each of the acts slated to perform in the Magic Circus Show was chosen via a rigorous selection process in their home country. RTÉ put a call out to young people earlier this year, and the many applicants were then screened by both an RTÉ panel and a Eurovision TV panel in Geneva. Galway Community Circus members Donnacha Lohan, Maria Cunningham and Patrick Flannagan, came out on top, earning the opportunity to represent Ireland.
Project Manager Ulla Hokkanen is delighted that Galway Community Circus members will be representing the country, and sees the selection of these young performers as an exciting opportunity to showcase what the circus and its youth training programme have to offer.
“Galway Community Circus is currently the only organisation in the Republic of Ireland offering structured training programmes for young people in this art form and a great resource for Galway. We are delighted to bring our young people to Europe to represent Ireland,” said Ulla.
The gala show, accompanied by the Magic Circus Show Orchestra, will be recorded in the Christmas big top in Geneva at the end of November, then broadcast throughout Europe and beyond over the 2012 Christmas season.
Galway Community Circus is starting its new season with an Open Day on Wednesday 12 September. The new season offers circus arts training programmes for young people between five and 20, adult courses and a weekly parent and toddler group taught by Irish and international circus artists. All are welcome to come along to the Open Day on Wednesday 12 September between 2pm and 6pm in the St Joseph’s Community Centre in Shantalla to try out circus skills and to register for the new season.
