Galway to stage 2011-12 finale Galway has been selected as the finish port for the 2011-12 race. The Irish port, the stopover for the transatlantic leg in the previous edition, saw off strong opposition from rival cities in the port bidding process.
Proudly Portuguese Three-race Whitbread veteran João Cabeçadas is delighted that the Volvo Ocean Race will visit Portuguese shores during the 2011-12 edition. His countrymen are "ready to accept the challenge", he says.
Gavignet's delight Whitbread/Volvo veteran Sidney Gavignet is delighted with the return of a French stopover for the next two editions of the Volvo Ocean Race. The Frenchman may yet be tempted by a fifth appearance in the event.
France returns to the route France is back on the Volvo Ocean Race route with the confirmation of Lorient as a stopover for the next two editions of the event. The French port will be the penultimate stopover for the 2011-12 race.
Lisbon's place in history Lisbon has fought off tough competition to be chosen as the first of the European ports for the 2011-12 Volvo Ocean Race. It will be the first time that the historic Portuguese port has hosted a stopover.
Raising the bar Cape Town is the first port selected from the formal port bidding process which was put in place for the 2011-12 race. Bruce Parker-Forsyth, head of the stopover organisation, says it was not a foregone conclusion.
Cape Town confirmed Cape Town has been confirmed as the first port of call for the 2011-12 Volvo Ocean Race. It is the first of a series of port announcements with the entire race route being revealed by the end of March.
