Galway Pro Choice are inviting members of the public to sign copies of a letter drawn up by the National Women’s Council calling on public representatives to legislate for the X Case. The group will have stalls on Shop Street from 12noon until 4pm today, Wednesday 19 December.
Galway Pro Choice will be arranging for Ms Claus and her helpers to hand deliver a sackful of the signed letters to the offices of Fine Gael TD Brian Walsh and Labour TD Derek Nolan this Friday, 21 December, when they will be meeting at Browne’s Doorway, Eyre Square at 2pm. All are welcome and are encouraged to wear Santa hats.
“It is completely unacceptable that the Government has still failed to take concrete action to legislate for the X Case, despite a recent Red C/Sunday Business Post poll showing that 85 per cent of Irish people support such legislation,” Rachel Donnelly of Galway Pro Choice.
“It has been two years since the ECHR judgement and an incredible 20 years since the X Case judgement. Legislation is urgently needed now.”
Sarah McCarthy of Galway Pro Choice said that despite Savita Halappanavar’s tragic death at University Hospital Galway in October, the Government have “done nothing to introduce legislation to protect the lives of pregnant women in Ireland”.
“In fact they actually voted against an Opposition bill intended to do just that. Procrastination and putting the abortion issue on the long finger hoping it will go away is just not acceptable any more. We need legislation and we need it now.”
