A public meeting on suicide is to be held in Loughrea on Monday night.
The meeting, entitled, ‘Public Consultation: Talk about Suicide’ is being held in the Loughrea Hotel at 8pm on Monday 26 November and Senator Lorraine Higgins has urged people to attend and give their input into this very important issue.
“The purpose of this meeting is for each and every member of our community, groups and organisations to make representations on this very important issue to Senator John Gilroy, who is the Special Rapporteur on Suicide Prevention to the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children,” said Senator Higgins.
Senator Gilroy has worked as a psychiatric nurse for 27 years and is presently compiling a report on this issue. He has met with numerous representatives from the professional, voluntary and community sectors over the last 12 months.
A representative from the Samaritans will also speak on the night.
“I am urging everyone with an interest in this area to come along and share your views with us. Given that people are not very often consulted on issues of public policy, I feel this event will provide important and valuable insights. It is only from this that true progress can be made on this issue.”
