Bridge House on Shop Street in Tuam is one of the oldest residences in
Tuam. Built in the early 1800s, this house is located beside the River
Nanny with its facade clad in Virginia creeper.
The house was originally built and owned by Mark Blake, who had a thriving brewery and milling business in the town. His son Charles was Sovereign (Mayor) of Tuam in 1820. During a riot at election time in 1837, Charles Blake instigated a police response where two men were shot dead. Mark's descendants lived in the house for 100 years. There has been a surgery in the house for the past 66 years. The circular garden at the front of the house is surrounded by iron railings and stone pillars. Entrance is through a front porch. A hallway provides access to the ground floor reception room and a family sitting room. To the back, the fitted kitchen is warmed by an oil fired AGA, furnished in pine and there are high walled gardens to the back of the house. There are three other rooms downstairs. These were originally used as a doctor's surgery. They have a separate entrance as well as access from the hall and could serve as an office, workroom, surgery or apartment. Upstairs, there is a bathroom and separate toilet and a wide hallway with a large window, which leads to the two formal reception rooms. The drawing room has an ornate white Adams fireplace, high windows, panelled walls and elegant proportions. The dining room also has an Adams fireplace and has access through a side corridor from the hallway. There are two decorated bedrooms on this floor. On the third floor, the master bedroom is decorated with a spacious dressing room. There are two other bedrooms and a bathroom. All the doors in the house are solid panelled pine and all the ceilings have centrepieces and cornices. The garden has been professionally landscaped. It has two patio areas, two water features and a garden shed. The main feature of this garden is probably the gazebo. There is access to the back of the property from Shop Street through double wooden-doors under the arch. At the back of the arch the stone-built coach house has been re-roofed and awaits conversion to a business premises or private dwelling. The sale of Bridge House represents a good investment opportunity. It is an elegant period house on an 8,406 sq. ft site in the middle of the town and it is zoned commercial.
