A 13 acre plot of agricultural land at Clooniffe, Moycullen, reached €64,615 an acre at auction in the Imperial Hotel, Galway on Friday 14 September. It was the first of five lots offered by Oughterard based auctioneer, Frank Conroy

The plot had frontage on to the Clooniffe road and extended back to Ballyquirke Lake. There was a ruined stone cottage and several old barns and outbuildings on the land. The land itself was good quality and had been well maintained.

The bidding opened at €200,000 and with five active bidders it rose steadily. It eventually came down to two bidders and the increases varied in amount as they played cat and mouse. Frank Conroy finally knocked the property down to a local man at €840,000.

A second plot of about 45 acres with a small commonage share was of mixed quality with about ten acres of green land and the balance marshy.  This plot made €410,000 and the buyer was also local.

The farmhouse with a curtilage of half an acre sold for €330,000.  Two other lots, one an acre plot with possible planning permission, did not reach the reserve but were sold in negotiation afterwards.  The entire sale yielded in excess of €1.7 million.
