Bearnardin and her husband Anthony, who runs the Little House of Avalon with her, set to work on renovating the house in March of 1998 and opened a few months later to a fantastic response.

“The reception we got from people was brilliant. A lot of our clients wanted to stay over, so we built a heath farm village. There were chalets in the garden with a sauna and a hot tub, a very relaxing environment.”

The Little House of Avalon has recently undergone further renovations with five new guestrooms, dining room, two additional therapy rooms, library, sitting room and meditation area, each decorated in a very unique way.

“I am very artistic and I tried to use that when decorating the place, so now all the rooms are very unique and different. My grandfather was an Italian artist and I really enjoyed the project. We are really pleased with the way it has turned out and the first few clients have been really happy as well,” she says.

The staff at the Little House of Avalon consist only of Bearnardin, Anthony and one of their close friends. With such a small staff and a blossoming business, they are all kept very busy but Bearnardin says that they do not allow it to become too stressful.

“We are very busy and work very long hours, but we try to keep the atmosphere nice and calm. It only gets hectic if you allow it too. Usually after a days work, we will join the guests for a drink in the evening, which gives us a chance to unwind and they really enjoy it too.”

Bearnardin’s husband is a native Zulu and served in the South African Airforce before meeting Bearnardin. His Zulu name is Khaghla meaning ‘wise old man’ and he is certainly well versed in complementary therapies, including holistic reflexology, kinesiology and analytical hypno/psychotherapy to provide a relaxing and stress-free experience.

“People in Ireland are so busy and they are always rushing around. A lot of our clients would be very stressed out and come for a bit of downtime,” explains Bearnardin.

In the future, Bearnardin and Anthony hope to continue with the new-look Little House of Avalon and keep the business as small and personal as it is.

“I wouldn’t like it to get too big. We are happy with the way it is now as we have personal contact with all our clients and we are happy to keep it that way!”
