Page 2
Name: Bearnardin Ní Goíbniu
Occupation: Proprietor, Little House of Avalon
Location: Taughmaconnell, Ballinasloe
Favourite thing about Galway: The older parts of the town and the quaint little houses
Worst thing about Galway: Can’t think of anything!

Bearnardin Ní Goibniu travelled the world as a jet-setting airhostess. However, she has now cashed in her air miles and settled in Ballinasloe, setting up a haven for rest and relaxation – the Little House of Avalon.

Bearnardin began her career as a laboratory technician in Switzerland and also worked in a private hospital and the surgery of a consultant who was sought after by celebrities, such as Richard Burton and Elisabeth Taylor. However, Bearnardin’s Swiss father had been a pilot and she soon followed in his footsteps, being bitten by the travel bug and becoming an air hostess.

After 21 years, Bearnardin was forced to retire from her career as an air hostess when she became ill from toxins used during flight. As a child, her grandparents had a huge interest in natural remedies, so she decided to heal her illness using only traditional medicine. This interest in holistic therapy is at the heart of the Little House of Avalon, with the emphasis on calm and de-stressing treatments in a tranquil environment.

Bearnardin’s mother hailed from Ireland and this led to her decision to ‘return back to Ireland’ in 1997 to set up her own business. She left the location in the hands of fate.

“I just put the map on the floor, closed my eyes and picked a place. I ended up between Birr and Athlone, which was strange as I had always started and ended my holidays in Birr as a child. So I circled a 30 mile radius around the spot and gave myself five days in November of 1997 to find a house. I found it on the second day and I instantly knew it was right,” she explains.

“It was a miserable day when we went to see it, but the birds outside were singing, so I just though if they are singing on a day like this it must be a good sign!”
