Deputy Gilmore sees crime, anti-social behaviour and a more accessible local government system as issues that need prioritising. “While the country has done well economically, there are certain aspects that are not functioning. We are a modern prosperous country and we should have a quality health service. At the rate we are at economically, we should at least match the services of poorer countries, but we are not even doing that. Having a county without drinking water is unacceptable. I also think there is a certain breakdown in relation to crime and anti-social behaviour and that needs to be addressed.”
“The pressures of development have put Gaeltacht areas under pressure but the growth of the Gaelscoileanna and the success of TG4 are instrumental in ensuring that the languages is continued. The Irish language is an amazing feature of Galway and I would like to encourage that as much as possible. One of the things I love about the place is that whenever I come down I can always have the ‘cupla focal’” he says. |
