Gardaí in Limerick are following a “definite line of enquiry” in the wake of an attack on an off-duty Co. Galway based garda at the weekend.
The garda, who is in his 20s and based in Gort, was left with serious head injuries after he was set upon by a group of teenagers in Limerick City in the early hours of Sunday morning.
It is understood that the man was returning from a night out when the incident occurred in the St Patrick’s Road area.
He was transferred to the Mid-Western Regional Hospital for treatment. Despite obtaining fractures to his skull in the attack, his injuries are not thought to be life threatening.
Speaking to the Galway Independent yesterday, Inspector Luke Conlon of Henry Street Garda Station in Limerick said detectives were following a line of enquiry in relation to the incident and that the suspected attackers were “known to gardaí”. However, no arrests have yet been made.
