Are you finished your undergraduate degree and don’t know what to do next? Are you looking at postgraduate programmes but not sure what is available to you? Well, students should bear in mind that there are many postgraduate programmes available to them regardless of their undergraduate degree discipline.
It is possible for students to take up a completely different subject matter at post graduate level. Students are often unaware that they can, in fact, transfer into a different discipline at postgraduate level without having any previous experience. There are many ‘conversion’ type programmes aimed at students who wish to change studies.
For example, students can study accountancy at postgraduate level if they wish to. They do not need to have completed a business or accountancy related undergraduate degree. Courses such as the Post Graduate Diploma in Accountancy, at GMIT, accepts graduates who hold H2.2 degree in a non accounting degree.
Furthermore, other careers which offer conversion style programmes include, but are not limited to, Medicine, Psychology, Law, Social Work, Primary Teaching, Occupational Therapy, Speech and Language Therapy and Human Resources. Furthermore, other courses such as Physiotherapy and Dietetics offer places at postgraduate level to students who meet degree requirements (such as a science degree etc).
Students should also not rule out looking to the UK as the UK offers numerous professional programmes at postgraduate level, such as Radiography and Radiology. It is very important that individuals considering postgraduate studies do not rule out a career based on the fact that it is unrelated to their undergraduate degree, as there are opportunities to go in a completely different direction.
