Over 1,125 volunteers signed up with Galway Volunteer Centre in 2012.
Volunteers registered with Galway Volunteer Centre contributed 41,565 hours to their community in 2012. Applying the average industrial wage, this voluntary effort has an equivalent value of over €916,000.
The most popular areas of interests for volunteers in 2012 were youth/children, arts/culture/media and older people. Of those who signed up to volunteer in 2012, 68 per cent were female and 59 per cent of newly registered volunteers had never volunteered before.
Volunteers who sign up with Galway Volunteer Centre are predominately young, with over 37 per cent of volunteers were aged between 16 and 25. 68 per cent of volunteers were aged under 35.
“We are thrilled to see a continued rise in the number of people volunteering in Galway City and County,” said Galway Volunteer Centre Manager Donncha Foley.
“Whilst 2012 was a challenging year for so many of us, it is heartening to see Galway residents remain as committed as ever to the local community.”
