Galway West Deputy Éamon Ó Cuív has welcomed the Government’s “u-turn” on the Irish Embassy in the Vatican City.
According to the Fianna Fáil TD, the embassy is of strategic importance and should never have been stood down in the first place.
“I’m glad that the Government has been forced into this u-turn. It was a mistake to close the embassy two years ago, and the reasons given by the Government at the time were completely bogus.
“At the time the closure was announced, I pointed out the diplomatic value of having representation at the Holy See and the networking influence it gave us. But the Government ignored all the advice and pressed ahead with their populist agenda.”
He added that “like so much with this Government, the primary consideration is PR and spin”.
“They closed the Vatican Embassy when they thought it would be popular and now they are re-opening it when they think it might be popular. It is no way to run a diplomatic service and I only hope they have learned from the mistake.”
