Galway musician Dave Donoghue, along with 400 guitar players, have broken the Guinness World Record for the longest guitar lesson in the world.
The lesson began at Monroe’s on Dominick Street on Good Friday at 9am and finished with a few extra minutes thrown in after 9am on Saturday 15 April.
The qualified guitar teacher, who runs Kaizen Guitar in Galway, strummed out for 24 hours to raise funds for Jigsaw Galway. With a target of €5,000, The Guitarathon hit this just after 10am, but the online platform is still available for donations and will be open for another week.
The Guitarathon was an Official Guinness World Record attempt over 24 hours, featuring 24 different hour-long lessons. There always had to be 20 students per class.
On finishing the 24 hour challenge, an emotional yet delighted Dave strummed out one last tune with over 20 students present to end on a high.
“It was something I wanted to do since 2013 and I am just overwhelmed today that it has happened, we have done it and people were just so supportive to this dream of mine. Some students were here for 13 hours playing. It has been a surreal 24 hours and I don’t think I can ever thank all my support team behind the scenes enough,” said Dave.
The event was run by Bash director Aoife Kenny, who was on site for 24 hours ensuring that all sessions were full and that the entire event ran as smoothly as possible.
“We needed to ensure Dave’s only focus was the music on the day, the admin side was down to our team and this has been an incredible and very rewarding challenge to be associated with. At 4am we needed that energy boost but between fresh faces coming in and the sheer talent in the room, we got there,” explained Aoife.
The Guitarathon was supported by Galway businesses including Bash, Joyces Supermarkets, Delta Security and Ultan Molloy Executive Performance Coaching.
