Galway dancer wins at World Championship

Wednesday, 19th April, 2017 1:01am

Clarinbridge’s Matthew Gardiner last week won the Under 18 Men’s World Championship in Irish Dancing in City West Dublin.

Originally from Colorado in the US, the student has been in the Top 4 in the World Championship for eight consecutive years and this is his second time winning the World Championship. He was the only solo dancer in Connacht to win a gold medal at this year’s Championship.

Matthew is currently studying for his Leaving Certificate at Presentation College Athenry, where he also plays on school soccer and basketball teams. He dances for the Hession School of Irish Dance in Salthill and his teachers are Gemma Carney and Dee Gallagher. Matthew regularly dances for the Kilfenora Ceili Band and Trad on the Prom and has appeared on the Late Late Show twice this year.

Matthew’s brother Michael is taking a couple of years out from his architecture studies in UL and is currently touring with Riverdance in the US and China. Matthew auditioned for Riverdance last week as it is his dream to tour with them one day also.
