Sunday parking charges delayed
Galway City Council’s plan to introduce a fee for parking on a Sunday is unlikely to come into effect this month as planned.
At November’s budget meeting, the local authority agreed to implement parking charges in the city between 1pm and 6pm on Sundays.
The move has sparked opposition from local businesses concerned it will discourage people from shopping in the city.
The fees were supposed to be introduced in January, however a spokesperson for Galway City Council stated this week the charges have not yet come into effect and indicated it could be another month or more before they are brought in.
Changes must first be made to parking signs and machines around the city. The spokesperson added that the council will let the public know “well in advance” before the parking charges come into effect.
It is estimated the new charges will yield €170,000 for the council’s coffers.
