Rugby star Robbie Henshaw will be the guest of honour at the official opening of this year’s Galway Christmas Market, turning on the city’s festive lights at 6pm this Friday, 20 November.
The launch ceremony will begin at 5.30pm with a carnival style parade commencing at the Spanish Arch on Quay Street. Connacht player Robbie will be joined by the Mayor of Galway City Cllr Frank Fahy, the Town Crier, St Patrick’s Brass Band, Claddagh School Choir, festive elves, animated characters and of course, the man in red himself guided by the Santa Express train through Shop Street before reaching Eyre Square for the official switching on of the market lights.
Now in its sixth year, the Galway Christmas Market will operate from 6pm on Friday 20 November until Tuesday 22 December. Eyre Square will once again be transformed into a magical Christmas village, where visitors can browse the wooden chalets for crafts, toys, jewellery, cosmetics, decorations and stocking fillers.
Foodies can tuck into a bratwurst, French pastries, pretzels or confectionery, crêpes and waffles, while beer lovers can sample a stein at the German Bierkeller, offering a range of traditional German beers, apple cider and mulled wine.
This year the Christmas Market experience will extend to the Spanish Arch, where a new festive hub similar to Eyre Square has been created for market goers. The area just off Quay Street will be brimming with a yuletide ambience as offering vintage amusements, food and craft stalls. The Windmill House bar will be at the centre of the Spanish Arch entertainment.
From this Friday, the market will be open Monday to Wednesday from 12noon to 8pm and Thursday to Sunday from 10am to 10pm (bars open until 9pm).
