Researchers at Ohio University in the United States are claiming to have made a discovery that could see cars indirectly powered by human waste. The scientists have pioneered a new electrolysis method that uses urine, rather than water, as a source of hydrogen. Urine is rich in hydrogen, and extracting it from urine requires only a quarter of the energy needed to extract it from water. The biggest hurdle to mass-production of hydrogen has been the huge energy cost in production. Scientists believe that this new innovation could see hydrogen become the fuel of choice for the car industry. Hydrogen-powered vehicles have several advantages over other zero-emission cars. It takes less time to refuel a hydrogen car than to recharge an electric vehicle, and they do not need to carry around heavy battery cells. |
