Toyota announces plans in the UK recently to carry out road tests on a plug-in hybrid vehicle. The vehicle will form part of energy company EDF's fleet and about 50 members of staff will test it for about a year. Toyota and EDF say they have developed an 'innovative charging and invoicing system' incorporated into the plug-in car which will be compatible with a new generation of public charging stations. Last year, the two companies announced a similar partnership in France and plan to roll out a car recharging infrastructure around Europe. In Germany Daimler and RWE are teaming up on an electric car project in another pairing between a carmaker and a power utility company. RWE will set up about 500 charging points in Berlin by the end of next year to serve more than 100 electric cars built by Mercedes-Benz and Smart. Daimler has confirmed that an electric plug-in version of the Smart city car will be on the market in 2010. |
