The psychology behind the different way men and women behave in their cars and the way they talk about them has been explained in a new study commissioned by BMW to help plan and design future models.

Called ‘The Secret Life of Cars and What They Reveal About Us’ by Dr Iain MacRury, of the University of East London, and Dr Peter Marsh claims that:

The average male drives with one hand on the steering wheel not to look cool, but because he considers the car to be part of himself. Meanwhile, women usually drive with two hands on the wheel because they consider the car to be a separate entity.

Men talk about their cars as a way of expressing their own feelings, while women are more comfortable expressing their feelings directly and see the car as separate. That’s why women give names to their cars.
Dr Marsh said: “Men hate talking about relationships. But the relationship they have with their car is different - because they identify with their cars.”

The authors claim that cup holders reveal a lot about drivers. “Cup holders show you live a contemporary executive lifestyle - that your time is precious,” said Dr MacRury.
